Alternate Hotel(s)

The Lambert Beach Resort (www.lambertresort.com) is a good beachfront alternative if you’re looking to save a few dollars.  The rooms start at $125.00.  The resort is within 4 miles of Trellis Bay.  You would need to take a cab to the resort pier and wait for the shuttle to the resort.  It is going to take some time (between 30 minutes and 1 hour 30 minutes) depending on whether you catch the shuttle at the dock but would save you a couple hundred dollars a night.

Pusser’s Marina Cay Resort (www.Pussers.com) is on the island adjacent to Scrub.  Pusser’s has a small boat they use to ferry customers (they also have a popular restaurant) back and forth to/from Trellis Bay.  The rates start at $150.  This will also take you some time to travel to Scrub Island (20 minutes up to an hour) depending on the availability of the ferry.

 BEEF ISLAND AIRPORT

 Guests wishing to fly directly into Tortola should use the Beef Island Airport (EIS).  Flights into this airport will typically cost about $725 pp and include 2 stops.  Julie and I flew into EIS using points in 2012.  It took us about 11 hours each way.   A Scrub Island representative will meet you in front of the airport and provide a complimentary van to the resort ferry dock.  It’s about 100 yards from the airport to the dock.

ST. THOMAS AIRPORT

  We will be using the St. Thomas airport (STT) for our wedding travel.  Fares typically cost about $425 pp with 1 layover.  I’ve seen flight times of 5 ½ to 6 hours on a number of different airlines.

ST. THOMAS TAXI

From STT, you will need to take a taxi to Charlotte Amalie (CA) or Red Hook (RH) depending on which ferry you will be using.  This should cost $20-$30 depending on your destination.  CA is only a couple of miles from the airport.

PUBLIC FERRY

 The last ferry of the day leaves at 4:30 p.m.  If your flight to STT arrives after 3:30 p.m., you will need to spend the night in St. Thomas.  Check the below link for ferry times and locations;

A roundtrip ferry ticket from St. Thomas to Tortola will cost between $50 and $60.  If possible, use a ferry that arrives in Road Town.   It will make for a shorter cab ride to Trellis Bay.  Make sure to plot out which ferry works with your schedule for the return trip, meaning you may want to buy 2 one way tickets if you will be using a different ferry service for your return.

PRIVATE FERRY/SHUTTLE SERVICE

 Check out www.dolphinshuttle.com if you wish to hire a private ferry service.  This is a company that can arrange for a car to meet you at STT for transport to the ferry dock.  For about $139.00 pp each way, a Dolphin Shuttle will be waiting to ferry you to Tortola.  Dolphin Shuttle can “express check” you through BVI customs while you and your luggage remain on the boat.  They will then transport you directly to the Scrub Island Dock.  This is a much more expensive option but will save you time and the trouble of getting off the ferry, going through customs, catching a taxi to Trellis Bay, and the resort shuttle to the island.

BVI CUSTOMS

 Everyone arriving from St. Thomas, USVI will pass through BVI Customs.   You MUST have a passport or other WHTI compliant documentation for entry.  Check the below link for their rules and regulations;

 http://www.bvitourism.com/entry-requirements

 The departure tax is $20 pp when leaving by air and $15 pp leaving by sea.

 TAXI TO TRELLIS BAY

 Trellis Bay is about six (6) miles from Road Town.  A taxi is about $25.00 and should take about 15 to 20 minutes.  A taxi from West End takes a little longer and is slightly more expensive.

 SCRUB ISLAND BOAT SHUTTLE

Wait at the small pier for the Scrub Island resort shuttle/ferry (the shuttle is included with your hotel resort fees).  It comes at 45 minutes after the hour from 5:45 a.m. to 10:45 p.m. daily.   You may see a number of locals at Trellis Bay or near the pier.  They are friendly.  No one will try and sell you anything or steal anything from you. If you need to wait for the next shuttle to arrive, they sell food and drinks at the grocery store and the internet café.   Once the shuttle arrives, it takes 8 minutes to the island.

RESORT

 Yay!  You have finally arrived! As you pull up to the resort dock, a smiling woman will be waiting with a rum punch.  She will take you to the lobby.  Check in should be smooth and easy.

 The U.S. Dollar is the official BVI currency.  All of the resorts and restaurants take plastic.  Cash is needed for cab fare and drinks at a non-resort beach bar.
